Hitchin MP welcomes Hollywood A-lister to Parliament

Alistair Strathern

Alistair Strathern, MP for Hitchin, welcomed Oscar winner Rami Malek to Parliament for an event to promote the important work of the International Rescue Committee, responding to humanitarian crises and supporting crucial immunisation campaigns around the world.

Strathern’s office arranged for the International Rescue Committee (IRC), led by its CEO, the former Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, to launch in Parliament their 2025 Emergency Watchlist of the 10 countries most in need of assistance.

Malek is an IRC ambassador, and was the keynote speaker at the event, alongside Miliband.

The IRC works in countries all over the world to support millions of people, included the record numbers of internally and externally displaced people in developing countries, by promoting and facilitating the spread of vaccinations, cash assistance in war-torn nations and emergency food supplies.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“It’s not everyday you get lobbied by an Oscar-winning actor!

“It was a surreal joy to host Rami Malek, and the fantastic International Rescue Committee in Parliament.

“Their work is vital in such a volatile world and supports millions of the most vulnerable people across the globe.”
