PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP
MONDAY 1st JUNE 2026
Alistair Strathern, the MP for Hitchin, has called on Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) to urgently act to make the B656 at Little Almshoe safer.
The small hamlet sits at a crossroads at the B656, between Luton and Hitchin. It has seen numerous serious accidents recently, with local residents highlighting 8 dangerous accidents already this year.
Strathern has received serious concerns from constituents about the road. One issue for residents is that accessing the bus stop means having to cross the 60mph road. A new build development is going ahead just north of the hamlet and Strathern wants council proceeds from this to go on making the B656 safer.
This includes extending the 30mph zone in Hitchin as far south as the new builds and moving from 60 to 40mph until south of Little Almshoe. Strathern also wants to see the give way signs on Little Almshoe Road at the crossing changed to Stop signs, with roads markings repainted as well.
He has written to Herts County Council on multiple occasions to share these concerns and ideas.
Alistair Strathern MP said:
“Residents at Little Almshoe deserve better than a dangerous walk to the bus stop, or a dodgy turn on to the main road to start their journeys.
“Constituents time and again have shared with me their desire for change at this crossroads. The number of accidents only demonstrate the need for the council to act.
“I will be working closely with the council to make sure we get these speed reductions and traffic calming measures to make Little Almshoe safe.”
