Alistair Strathern, MP for Hitchin, has been recognised as one of Movember’s official Men’s Health Champions for 2025.
Movember, the UK’s leading men’s health charity, issues the awards to recognise leaders and advocates for their commitment to improving men’s physical and mental health across the UK.
Since being elected as an MP, Strathern has championed the need to break down stigmas around men’s health and mental health, drawing upon his own experiences prior to entering Parliament.
Over the last year he has worked closely with Movember to press the Government to deliver an ambitious Men’s health strategy, with the announcement at the end of 2025 including a strong focus on men’s mental health and the importance of community solutions and support.
Men’s mental health is positioned as one of the most urgent public health challenges of our time. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for men under 50, and men account for around three‑quarters of all suicides. Men delay asking for help due to stigma, cultural expectations around stoicism, and limited access to flexible, male‑friendly services, often resulting in late intervention and preventable crises. Movember’s Champions programme aims to confront these barriers head‑on.
As part of this, in January and Strathern convened groups from across his constituency for a men’s mental health ‘walk and talk event’ to spotlight the need to break down stigmas and discuss how provision and support could be improved locally.
Commenting on the award, Alistair Strathern MP said:
“This recognition from Movember is a real honour. Improving men’s health outcomes, whether through early cancer detection, better mental health support, or tackling stigma remains a vital mission.
“Men are still far too often suffering in silence. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under 50, and too many reach crisis point before getting help. Movember’s work is saving lives, and I’m proud to support their efforts to ensure more men get the help they need, when they need it.
“Locally I’m committed to improving men’s health and engaging with groups like Stag Walkers, For Men to Talk, Stotfold Men's Walk and Talk Group and other community projects to advocate for better support.
“In Parliament, having set up the Labour Group for Men and Boy’s, I’m determined to help lead efforts to finally address neglected men’s health issues like mental health and prostate cancer.”
