Alistair Strathern MP has celebrated victory in his campaign for the Government to require solar panels on most new builds – a step he says is vital to both the green transition and reducing bills.
The announcement comes as part of a wider pledge to triple solar and quadruple wind capacity by 2030, a key milestone in the Labour Government’s push to decarbonise its energy system.
Since being elected, Strathern has ran a longstanding campaign to push the government to act, raising the issue several times in Parliament, writing to ministers and running a local campaign backed by hundreds of his constituents. After the announcement that solar panels would now be mandatory for new homes, Strathern thanked all of the residents who backed his campaign and helped make this possible.
Commenting, Alistair Strathern MP said:
“It is brilliant news that the Government have heard our campaign and are rolling out solar panels for new builds.
“I know that for many of us it’s been a real source of frustration to see new homes go up without solar panels as standard – missing an obvious chance to cut bills and carbon!
“We need to seize every opportunity to make the most of the energy transition to clean, green renewable power and this is a really positive step towards that.

“Thank you to everyone who signed our petition and helped us campaign for change – this win belongs to all of us!”
