PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP
WEDNESDAY 20TH NOVEMBER
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alistair Strathern, MP for the Hitchin constituency, has called for Central Bedfordshire Council to begin repair work to Old Bridge Way, a major road through the centre of Shefford.
Mr Strathern has written to the council to urge them to commence works. He is seeking as many signatures as possible from constituents to raise support and urgency.
The road contains many dozen deep potholes and bumps. The road for years has been privately-owned and unmaintained, allowing it to erode and wear.
Now the road is effectively ownerless, Central Bedfordshire Council can temporarily patch the road to restore it to a smooth and safe surface.
Mr Strathern has received countless emails from constituents complaining about the safety of the road. Some have reported flat tyres and damage to their cars.
Many residents weave on the road to avoid the hazardous potholes, and in avoiding one hazard, can create another.
Alistair Strathern MP said:
“Anyone who is from the Shefford area knows all too well how bad a road Old Bridge Way is.
“The deep potholes are dangerous for cars and pedestrians.
“It is well past time for this road to be patched. Central Bedfordshire Council can and should begin work soon.
“In the Government’s recent budget, an extra £500m was allocated for pothole and road maintenance. I will be lobbying to use part of this money in Shefford.”
