PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP
THURSDAY 13th NOVEMBER 2025
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alistair Strathern, MP for the Hitchin constituency, has welcomed reforms announced by the Government to shake up policing authorities across the country.
The Government will phase out Police and Crime Commissioners, and transfer their responsibilities to Mayors across the country. Existing Police and Crime Commissioners including those in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire will continue in their roles until 2028 when their term finishes.
It is expected these changes will save the Government £100 million this Parliament and, once fully implemented, at least £20m every year after – enough to hire over 300 police officers.
Strathern and the Government wishes to thank existing and past Police and Crime Commissioner’s for their tireless service and efforts to make their communities safer.
Strathern, who regularly meets with Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioners, will be working with the Government to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible for the two counties.
Alistair Strathern MP said:
“Our communities rightly deserve a policing system that is efficient and delivers results.
"That means getting more resources out of bureaucracy, and into frontline policing.
"This move will save over £100m which can be better spend on hundreds of extra police officers.
“I want to thank all those who have served as Bedfordshire or Hertfordshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, including in particular John Tizard the Beds PCC who has worked tirelessly with me to boost neighbourhood policing.
“I will continue to work as normal with PCCs on local challenges and prepare for the coming transition.”
