Hitchin MP celebrates securing £11 million extra pothole funding for Hertfordshire and Central Beds

PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

FRIDAY 20th DECEMBER 2024

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, has today welcomed news that Hertfordshire and Central Bedfordshire will receive an extra £11.8m to tackle potholes.

The Government announced today £1.6bn extra funding would go to local authorities next year, including £9.3m for Hertfordshire County Council and £2.5m for Central Bedfordshire Council. This funding is on top of £33.8m in regular funding for road repairs locally, bringing total funding to £45.3m in Central Beds and Herts.

The extra funding will amount to as many 7 million potholes being fixed next year across the country, keeping motorists safe and saving families potentially thousands of pounds in repairs.

Since becoming an MP, Strathern has campaigned to better maintain and fix roads across Beds and Herts, including unadopted privately-owned roads, and particularly-glaring examples like Old Bridge Way in Shefford and the High Street and Shefford road in Meppershall.

In the general election campaign, Labour promised to fix one million potholes a year. This announcement blows that previous commitment out of the water.

Alistair Strathern MP:

“This extra £11m for local potholes is fantastic news for motorists and families across our area.

“We deserve roads that are safe to prevent injury and high costs from punctures and car damage.

“I am pleased that local campaigning by myself and other Labour MPs has highlighted the gravity of this situation and led to this funding commitment.

“I will continue to fight for safer and smoother roads for our area in 2025 and beyond.”
