PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP

FRIDAY 4th JULY 2025

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alistair Strathern, the MP for the Hitchin constituency, joined local Nationwide staff to celebrate the town’s newly-refurbished branch and the return of Friday opening hours.

Strathern met with branch staff and customers, discussed their operations in Hertfordshire and their plans for the future.

In the last number of years, high street banking branches have fallen across the country. A key pledge Strathern made when elected was to stand up for our high streets. Since entering office, he has met with dozens of local businesses, supported business rates reform in Parliament and the expansion of banking hubs across the country.

Nationwide has 605 branches across the UK. In Strathern’s constituency there are 29,155 Nationwide customers, with as many as 46% of households in Hitchin having at least one Nationwide customer living there.

The branch can be found at 12 Market Pl, Hitchin SG5 1DL.

Alistair Strathern MP said:

“It was great to be invited to Nationwide in Hitchin to officially mark the store’s reopening and refurbishment.

“With so many bank branches retreating from high streets, this is a great vote of confidence and boost for Hitchin.

“I want to see more growth in our local town centres. I will continue to stand up for local businesses at every opportunity in Parliament.”
