PRESS RELEASE FROM ALISTAIR STRATHERN MP
MONDAY 12th JANUARY 2026
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alistair Strathern, MP for Hitchin, will be leading a 4.5km walk and talk event in Hitchin on Friday 17 January, as part of a nationwide programme of events highlighting men’s mental health around Blue Monday.
The walk is being organised by the Labour Group for Men and Boys, with dozens of MPs across the country holding 4.5km walks, runs and cycling events to draw attention to the challenges many men face with mental health – and the need for better support, earlier intervention and cultural change. Devastatingly, the biggest killer of men under 50 in the UK remains suicide.
It is 4.5km because men have a life expectancy in the UK which is 4.5 years lower than women.
The Hitchin walk will start at 8.00am, meeting at Swinburne Avenue Car Park (SG5 2RR), and is open to anyone who would like to take part.
Thanks to Hitchin Town FC, participants will also receive 50% discounted admission to the 3pm match that day between Hitchin and Marlow.
The events follow the Government’s publication before Christmas of the first‑ever Men’s Health Strategy, which focuses on mental health, suicide prevention, and access to services, and sets out a plan to address longstanding inequalities.

Alistair Strathern MP said:
“Too many men still struggle in silence when it comes to their mental health. This walk is about starting conversations, breaking down stigma, and showing that support is there.
“I’m really proud that Labour MPs across the country are coming together to highlight this issue – and that we’re doing it here in Hitchin with something that brings people together in a positive, practical way.”
